Discover Thai Issan

When you're in the mood for flavorful, authentic Thai food, there's a spot in Salt Lake City that’s been delighting locals and visitors alike. Thai Issan at 2644 W 4700 S is a hidden gem that transports you straight to the heart of Thailand with every bite. Known for its fresh ingredients and traditional recipes, this restaurant is a must-visit for anyone craving the bold, spicy, and aromatic dishes of Thai cuisine.

From the moment you step inside, you're greeted by a warm, inviting atmosphere. The décor is simple yet charming, with wooden accents and warm lighting creating a cozy dining experience. Whether you're a Thai food connoisseur or someone looking to try something new, the menu at Thai Issan offers something for everyone.

The star of the show at this restaurant is undoubtedly its diverse and extensive menu. One of the first things you’ll notice is the authenticity of the dishes. Thai Issan specializes in the regional cuisine of Northeast Thailand, also known as the Issan region, which brings a unique combination of flavors that are hard to find anywhere else in the city. The food is bold, often balancing heat with sweetness and savory richness. The use of fresh herbs, lime, fish sauce, and chilis creates dishes bursting with depth and flavor.

Start your meal with an appetizer like the som tam (green papaya salad). This refreshing dish is the perfect balance of sour, spicy, and salty, with the crunch of papaya and peanuts providing a satisfying texture. It’s a popular dish in Thailand and the version at Thai Issan is a true representation of the flavors you’d find in the streets of Bangkok.

For mains, there’s a wide selection to choose from. If you’re a fan of grilled meats, the grilled chicken or moo ping (grilled pork skewers) are incredibly popular. Each skewer is marinated with a blend of spices and grilled to perfection, offering that smoky, juicy goodness with a touch of char. But for those who enjoy a bit more heat, the pad kra pao (stir-fried basil with your choice of protein) will not disappoint. It’s savory, spicy, and packed with the aromatic flavors of basil and garlic. The spiciness of the dish is just the right level to give you that satisfying kick without overwhelming the taste buds.

Of course, no Thai meal is complete without a hearty bowl of curry, and Thai Issan’s green curry is a fan favorite. The richness of coconut milk and the aromatic blend of herbs and spices make this curry a comforting and satisfying dish that pairs perfectly with a steaming bowl of jasmine rice. Whether you choose chicken, beef, or tofu, you can taste the balance of flavors that make Thai curry so special.

Another must-try dish is the larb (minced meat salad). This zesty salad is made with minced chicken or pork, mixed with herbs, lime juice, and fish sauce, creating a fresh yet savory flavor. It's light yet packed with flavors, making it a great option for a refreshing start to your meal or even a side dish.

One of the unique aspects of dining at Thai Issan is the level of customization you can enjoy. Whether you prefer your dishes with a mild kick or crave something extra spicy, the friendly staff is happy to adjust the heat level to suit your taste. This personalized touch adds to the welcoming feel of the restaurant and ensures that each meal is tailored to your preferences.

But the experience doesn’t end with the food. The service at Thai Issan is exceptional. The staff is knowledgeable about the menu and always happy to recommend dishes if you’re unsure what to order. They genuinely care about making your dining experience memorable, which is part of the reason why so many people return time and again.

In terms of pricing, Thai Issan offers great value for the quality and authenticity of the dishes they serve. You can expect a hearty meal that will leave you satisfied without breaking the bank. Whether you're dining in or grabbing takeout, the quality of the food remains consistent, ensuring you get the same delicious flavors every time.

For those who are new to Thai food or simply want to dive deeper into the rich flavors of Issan cuisine, Thai Issan is an excellent choice. With its inviting atmosphere, friendly service, and mouthwatering dishes, it’s a place that offers a true taste of Thailand right in the heart of Salt Lake City. Whether you’re craving something spicy, sweet, or savory, you’re sure to find a dish that will hit the spot and leave you coming back for more.

  • The food was super tasty and the staff were very friendly. We ordered the curry, pad thai, and vegetable egg rolls. It was an enjoyable meal. Definitely would return!

  • I’ve tried Thai restaurants all around the valley and this by far is one of my favorites. It’s definitely a mom and Pop shop, but the flavor and quality of food is top-tier. Their yellow curry and pad ki mao are absolutely amazing. If you have a sweet tooth, I would definitely recommend trying their Thai tea. Also would highly recommend their cream cheese wontons for appetizers

  • We were in from out of town and decided we wanted to find Thai. The green curry was excellent as was the Thai fried rice. I wish this delightful Mom & Pop place was in Colorado!

  • 5 Stars – Amazing Customer Service and Delicious Thai Food Thai Issan is off to a fantastic start! The customer service was top-notch—everyone was incredibly kind and helpful. I ordered by phone and they made the process super easy. Even when I was running late (and couldn’t find my car keys), they gave me a friendly reminder call and were totally understanding. That level of care goes a long way! I also really appreciate that their prices are more affordable than other spots in the neighborhood—thank you for keeping it accessible! Now for the food: Tom Kha Soup – WOW. Easily in my top five of all time. I order this dish often and theirs is rich with coconut flavor, perfectly balanced—not too sweet—with amazing fragrance from fresh herbs. The mushrooms were great, and they were happy to accommodate my special request for light onion. 1000% recommend this dish! Mango Sticky Rice – A few bucks cheaper than other places, but just as good. The mango was perfectly ripe and the rice had a great texture. It could’ve used a touch more coconut cream for my taste, but if you like your sticky rice on the less-sweet, more natural side, this is for you. Pad Thai – Solid. Nothing especially standout, but it hits the mark if you’re in the mood. Chicken Satay – Loved that they included two sauces! The curry seasoning was good, but I prefer my satay a bit more tender and marinated—it tasted more like a grilled chicken entrée. Still enjoyable, just a different style than I’m used to. The space is cute, welcoming, and easy to get to with convenient parking. A great little gem whether you’re local or just passing through. I’ll definitely be back!

  • Came by to have lunch and was greeted by a very friendly young lady and told I can sit anywhere I wanted. Before she left she asked what I wanted to drink and gave me a menu. The menu has many choices and I decided on Pad King she asked how spicy I wanted it and we had a discussion on American spicy it Thai spicy. I choose 6 Thai spicy. The food came out fairly quickly and I got white rice with my meal. I think the spice was just more red pepper flakes and not a real Thai spice for heat. But the dish was decent and I got a portion size that was about right for lunch. There were no leftovers which is unusual for me because I normally can’t eat the entire meal. I think the place although hidden in a corner or a small shopping center had good food and was extremely clean the staff was outstanding.

  • Thai Issan is a tucked away golden egg! Nestled in the corner of a small shopping plaza this restaurant is worth the trip. Friendly staff, delicious food and solid portion sizes everyone in your party will leave happy. The fresh spring rolls and the egg drop soup were a hit with the whole group, worth it!

  • We got the orange chicken and yellow chicken curry and it was delicious. Some of the best I’ve ever tasted. This place is a hidden gem. Don’t pass it up!
